The word Dam (Arabic: دم) literally means “blood” but is the term commonly used to refer to the sacrificial act of slaughtering an animal to rectify errors made during Umrah and Hajj.

It is related to compensatory actions (fidyah) required when:

  • A pilgrim violates certain rules of Ihram.
  • A pilgrim violates the sanctity of the Haram.
  • A pilgrim fails to perform a mandatory act (wajib) during Umrah or Hajj.

Common Mistakes Requiring Dam

Mistakes Related to Miqat (Boundary for Ihram)

Crossing the Miqat without entering Ihram or making the intention for Umrah or Hajj.

Additional Info: If the individual returns to any Miqat and enters Ihram with the proper intention, the penalty is waived.

Mistakes in Ihram and Their Penalties

  1. Removing hair from the body.
  2. Using fragranced products (e.g., deodorants, scented wipes) on large parts of the body.
    Additional Info: If fragrance is applied to small parts of the body, Sadaqah is required.
  3. Applying henna (mehndi).
  4. Clipping all nails on one hand or foot.
    Additional Info:
    • If all nails of both hands and feet are clipped at once, only one penalty is due.
    • For clipping nails at different times or places, a separate penalty is due for each occurrence.
    • If fewer than five nails are clipped, Sadaqah is required for each nail.
  5. Covering half or the full face for 12 hours or more, such as during sleep.
  6. Kissing or touching with lust.
  7. Using toothpaste while in Ihram.

Mistakes in Tawaf

  1. Performing Tawaf in a state requiring a shower (ghusl), during menstruation, or without ablution (wudhu).
    Additional Info: Penalty is waived if the Tawaf is repeated correctly.
  2. Performing Tawaf in a wheelchair without a valid reason (tiredness is not valid).
  3. Completing Umrah but failing to cut hair before entering Ihram for another Umrah.
    Additional Info: Perform the second Umrah and cut hair afterward to avoid multiple penalties.

Mistakes in Sa’i

  1. Performing Sa’i in a wheelchair without a valid reason.
  2. Missing more than four rounds of Sa’i.
    Additional Info: Penalty is waived if Sa’i is repeated.

Mistakes in Cutting Hair

  1. Cutting hair outside the boundary of the Haram.
  2. Cutting hair before completing Sa’i during Umrah.
  3. Cutting hair before stoning the pillars on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah (during Hajj).
  4. Delaying hair-cutting after sunset on the 12th of Dhul-Hijjah (during Hajj).

Prerequisites for the Validity of Dam

To ensure the validity of Dam (sacrificial slaughter), there are various essential conditions that must be met. With our Dam service, we ensure that these conditions are met when selecting a suitable animal.

Animal Criteria

  • Eligible Animals: The animal must be from the permissible categories for sacrificial animals (qurbani or udḥiyah): goat, sheep, ox, buffalo or camel. Animals from other categories do not fulfill the requirement.
  • Defect-Free Animal: The animal must be free of defects.
  • Minimum Age: The animal must meet the age requirements:
    • Goat: At least one year old.
    • Sheep: At least sixth months old.
    • Ox or buffalo: At least two years old.
    • Camel: At least five years old.

Slaughter Process

  • Recitation of Bismillah: The name of Allah must be recited at the time of slaughter.
  • Slaughtering the Animal: The animal must be slaughtered; it is not valid to offer a live animal as charity.
  • Timing of Slaughter: The Dam must be slaughtered after the specific violation or obligation it is addressing. Preemptive slaughter is not valid.
  • Location: The slaughter must occur within the Haram (the sacred area around Makkah).
  • Eligible Slaughterer: The slaughterer must be a Muslim or a member of the Ahl al-Kitab (People of the Book).

Meat Distribution

  • Meat Distribution: The meat must be given to the poor. Pilgrims themselves are not permitted to consume the meat of the Dam sacrifice. If there are no poor people present, it suffices to slaughter the animal and leave the meat.
  • Eligible Recipients: The meat must be given to eligible recipients of charity (sadaqah). It is impermissible to give the meat to certain relatives (e.g., parents, children, or spouses), slaves, the Banu Hashim (family of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), or non-Muslims.
  • Number of Recipients: It is permissible to give the meat to one poor person or distribute it among many.
  • Location of Distribution: The meat should be distributed to the poor and needy in the Haram, whether they are local residents or visitors. While it is preferable to give the meat to the needy within the Haram, it may also be given to poor individuals outside the Haram, particularly if they are in greater need.

  1. Fasting: The pilgrim can fast for three days.
  2. Feeding the Poor: The pilgrim may feed six poor individuals two meals each or give each of them one kilogram of food in charity (Sadaqah).

The Prophet ﷺ came to me during the period of Al-Hudaibiya, while I was lighting fire underneath a cooking pot and lice were falling down my head. He said, “Do your lice hurt you?” I said, “Yes.” He said, “Shave your head and fast for three days or feed six poor persons or slaughter a sheep as a sacrifice.”
